At Capstone this Sunday, we are beginning a three-week mini-series called, "The Core." To prepare, I've been doing some research on fruit, its core, and its seeds. It's been surprisingly fascinating, especially since my mind rarely spends much time on the scientific.
I have discovered that it all comes down to the ovaries and seeds. The core of a pear, for example, is actually its ovary. The purpose of the core (ovary) is to produce seeds so that the plant will be reproduced. The exterior sweet fruit is actually the packaging that carries the core that carries the seeds that will lead (hopefully) to a new fruit-bearing tree.
Are you starting to see how all this connects to the church and a sermon series? Stick with me: The church is much like the core of a fruit. At the church's core must be the mission of creating an environment where Christ-followers can develop and grow and then go out and reproduce themselves --- just like the fruit's ovary produces seeds that will eventually be dispersed and grow into new fruit-bearing trees.
It's really all about reproduction and that's what we must be doing as the church and as Christ-followers. It's not enough to say we've made enough seeds so we'll just take care of what we have. It's not enough for you and me to decide that we like the seed we're becoming and so we'll just keep growing in hopes of becoming a better seed. It's time that this core start reproducing and doing so at a much faster rate.
So we'll spend the next few weeks talking about Capstone's core and how God wants each of us to be an essential part of the reproduction process. We'll even talk about ovaries and seeds...I can't wait to see the looks I get about that one! Don't miss this Sunday at Capstone!
